Child Maintenance: Britons set to receive a ‘cash boost’ in plans to help parents

Child Maintenance is intended to support parents by offering important aid when raising a child in the UK. The arrangement is usually reached between a person and the other parent of their child, when the couple are no longer together.When one parent is primarily responsible for raising a child, the other parent will provide them with payment to support the young person.

In most circumstances, parents can come to an arrangement between themselves, but in some instances, the Child Maintenance Service (CMS) may need to step in.

Regardless of the situation, the Child Maintenance Service is there to offer support and guidance to parents in this kind of arrangement.

Today, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has published new proposals on how it plans to get more cash to children of separated families.

Improvements of CMS will see unearned income such as dividends and income from rental properties, automatically included in income calculations for paying parents.

As a result, the mother can now receive five times more cash in child support which is a welcome form of assistance. 

The DWP Minister, Baroness Stedman-Scott, commented on the matter.

She said: “If we are to give children the best start in life, then money matters.

“These powers mean we can access all kinds of income, unlocking more money for the children of separated parents.

“Including income from rental properties and dividends also helps us tackle those parents who use complex financial arrangements to deliberately hide their income to avoid paying for their children.”

The Child Maintenance Service is also working on making it easier for separated parents to access the service.

It will do this by enabling notifications from the CMS to be received and accessed digitally via the My Child Maintenance Case online portal.

It is hoped the changes enacted by the Government today will help combat child poverty, by ensuring more money gets to children.

This has built upon the launch of a new automated phone line for CMS payments which was announced in April.

It is open seven days a week and 24 hours a day for Britons who need access to it. 

The service is designed to eliminate waiting times for paying parents in an effort to benefit children right across the country.

The proposals are currently being put forward under a consultation, which means responses will be taken into account.
