Richard Keys has stated that he intends to take legal action against Gabby Logan over claims in her book that he and Andy Gray joked about refusing to have sex with pregnant women in her presence when she was expecting twins. Logan recounted a flight she took to Istanbul for the Champions League final back in 2005 in her memoir, serialised by The Mail on Sunday.
The broadcaster was covering the match for ITV and was sat in the row behind Keys and Gray on the plane to Turkey ahead of the fixture. She went on to claim that she was left ’embarrassed’ after overhearing a conversation between the pair in which they discussed the topic of sleeping with pregnant women.
“I was seven months pregnant with twins, and I was huge, I looked like I’d swallowed a space hopper,” wrote Logan. She went on to claim that the comments in question were made by Keys in full earshot of herself and the other passengers in the vicinity.
“I was embarrassed, of course, and thought their comments were especially cruel, bearing in mind they both had children and wives of their own,” she added.
Keys issued a response to Logan’s claims, which he described as ‘wildly inaccurate’, with a tweet on Saturday night in which he vowed to pursue legal action over the matter.
He said: “With reference to an article published by The Mail on Sunday written by Ms Gabby Logan. Ms Logan has made a number of wildly inaccurate allegations in the process of defaming my reputation.
“I have referred the matter to lawyers with a view to proceeding with libel action.”
Keys and Gray were hired by beIN Sports in 2013 to host their coverage of Premier League and European football, two years after leaving Sky Sports following a scandal regarding derogatory comments made about lineswoman Sian Massey and further clips of the pair making sexist comments off-air. Keys apologised at the time, telling talkSPORT: “Our prehistoric banter is not acceptable in a modern world. We were wrong. It was wrong.
“It shouldn’t have happened. I hope this starts the process of recovery and that everybody now can just step back and understand that, you know, these boorish and bullish guys understand the magnitude of what happened.”
